Ars-Legendi Prize 2023

Nomination of M. Ed. Lesley-Ann Baldwin

The Department of Textile Studies and the Textile Studies Student Council have nominated research assistant Lesley-Ann Baldwin for the Ars legendi Prize. The prize is awarded by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the German Rectors' Conference for excellent university teaching and underlines the importance of university teaching for the training of young academics. Nominations are made by the faculties.

The reason for Lesley-Ann Baldwin's nomination in Textile Studies is her commitment to sustainability education. In her Bachelor's and Master's thesis, she developed the concept of the student company Fairo Moda. Fairo Moda is a clothing rental service for students and staff at Osnabrück University. The University of Osnabrück is the only university in Germany to have a university clothing rental service through the Department of Textile Studies. It is run by student employees. Lesley-Ann Baldwin is currently working on her doctorate on the topic: “Vestimentary sustainability in the didactic context of higher education: development of an inter- and transdisciplinary ESD module based on the Fairo Moda clothing rental service”. Lesley-Ann Baldwin's courses aim to address sustainable issues as well as justice between present and future generations. The student teachers transfer what they have learned to schools, where future generations are prepared for an environmentally conscious, self-determined life. Lesley-Ann Baldwin's doctoral project aims to anchor the concept of sustainability throughout Osnabrück University. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary ESD modules are intended to network university institutions and thus make teaching and research at Osnabrück University more sustainable.

Throwback: Summer semester 2022

What an exciting Fairo semester is coming to an end these weeks....

The last few months have been filled with numerous highlights. For example, as part of the Fashion Revolution Week (April 18-24), together with FEMNET e.V., we showed the movie "Made in Bangladesh", which uses a fictional story to highlight the life and structural difficulties of textile workers in Bangladesh. The event was well attended. Afterwards, there was a stimulating discussion about our clothing consumption and alternatives as well as difficulties and the effects of the textile industry.  Furthermore we started a Fairo Moda regulars' table. The goal of our grouping has not yet fully crystallized. However, so far a good and loose exchange (not only about Fair o/e Mod a/e) is to be registered. If you still want to join, feel free to contact us!

In addition, we went shopping with the Haus of Udo team (yeah, right!) at the secondhand giant Schrader for the Rüschenplüsch clothing rental. In June, we hosted the dress-up booth at the Haus of Udo festival. There we met a lot of nice people and had a lot of fun.

But the highlight of this semester was probably the elaborately planned shoot with photographer Marie Hense. The wonderful results will be presented shortly.

In the last paragraph before my summer vacation, I would like to thank my world-beating Hiwis Rieke and Julia, who always go along with my quick-fire ideas and complete Fairo with their great personalities. Merci!

Fairo Moda

Successful launch of the university didactic clothing rental service

The university didactic clothing rental service Fairo Moda of the Department of Textile Studies has been open for a month now. Fairo Moda makes a contribution to sustainable clothing consumption and to Osnabrück University's commitment to Education for Sustainable Development, or ESD for short. The first Fairo Moda customers have already started the second lending round and have borrowed summery garments and wedding outfits. Many thanks for all the wonderful feedback on the opening! The work in the rental shop and the exchange are a great pleasure. Students or members of the university who would like to borrow clothes are very welcome. Fairo Moda will take a summer break during the semester break. The last date for borrowing or exchanging clothes is July 23, 2021. Fairo Moda will be back with new opening hours in the week of September 20.

Borrowing instead of buying

Fairo Moda opens with Click & Borrow conzept

The time has finally come: Fairo Moda will open its doors on June 1, 2021. The university-internal and university didactic clothing rental service is located on the city center campus in building 52/E03 with access opposite Seminarstraße 33 in Osnabrück. The principle works like a library with clothes instead of books. Fairo Moda wants to act according to the motto of the sharing economy (like the car-sharing principle) and offer an opportunity for shared clothing consumption. The project was initiated by the Department of Textile Studies. In its academic theory, the course deals intensively with vestimentary sustainability and now also offers a practical opportunity for students and employees of Osnabrück University in the form of a clothing rental service. three items of clothing can be borrowed at the same time. The offer is free of charge. A deposit of 60 euros is required when registering, which will be refunded when you check out. The money or part of the money will be retained if the borrowed textiles are lost or damaged. Due to the current situation, there will be a soft opening on June 1, 2021. A small opening ceremony has been postponed but not canceled. It will take place once the coronavirus situation has eased and gatherings are possible again.

Fairo Moda is complying with the coronavirus measures. The hygiene concept provides for a Click & Borrow appointment organization and a guidance system through building 52 (entrance via Seminarstraße, exit via Neuer Graben). Furthermore, visitors must wear an FFP2 mask and adhere to the general hygiene and distancing rules. As the Fairo Moda premises are not large, one person per slot is initially allowed to visit the rental shop. Fashion advice is available from the supervising students if required. They can also take photos on request if interested parties would like to get an opinion from friends via Messenger. The number of Fairo Moda members is limited, so it is worth making an appointment early to browse, register and borrow clothes. The Fairo Moda team is happy to welcome you on Tuesdays from 2.00 to 5.00 pm and Thursdays from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. If you are interested in Fairo Moda and would like to book an appointment for Click & Borrow, please join the study group Fairo Moda: university clothing rental on STUD.IP: https://studip.uni-osnabrueck.de/dispatch.php/course/studygroup/details/60ae495965fc53d02b3bab5f0063af01

Ozone wardrobe for university clothing rental Fairo Moda

Ozone cleaning of odors, viruses and bacteria for rental clothing

The Textile Studies department has purchased a new ozone cabinet to remove odors, viruses and bacteria. During a training session, graduate engineer Roland Krüger explained the possible uses and application of the device. The aim is to clean used clothing for the university's didactic clothing rental service Fairo Moda in a gentle, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way using this ozone cabinet. This makes Osnabrück University the first university or college in Germany to have an ozone cabinet of the kind that theaters, playhouses, museums and costume collections often use. An ozone cabinet is an airtight, lockable chrome steel cabinet. Inside it, objects such as clothing, shoes or yarn cones are treated with ozone for around an hour. This eliminates bacteria or viruses. As the smell of sweat is a metabolic product of bacteria, the odor disappears with this ozone application. In addition to cleaning the clothing of the student clothing rental service Fairo Moda, the ozone cabinet is used for the prophylactic treatment of yarns, fabrics and the department's historical clothing archive.
